All the numbers on the legalization of Cannabis in the United States.
Voting night in the United States was also an opportunity for some states to express their opinion on referendum questions. Of the nine states that voted on a referendum on the decriminalization of marijuana together with the presidential elections, eight approved it, one, Arizona, rejected it. Four states – California, Nevada, Maine and Massachusetts – have legalized it for “recreational” purposes, four others – Florida, Arkansas, Montana and North Dakota – for medical purposes only. The question rejected in Arizona proposed free cannabis for recreational purposes.
In California in particular, where medical use was already legal, Proposition 64 passed, legalizing marijuana , in what is considered the most important victory of the movement for the legalization of the soft drug also for recreational use. The 8 states now join Colorado, Washington State, Oregon, Alaska and Washington DC that have previously approved similar measures.
The measure approved in California requires the state to treat marijuana like alcohol, thus introducing measures to control and tax the legal production of the soft drug. According to the measure, those over 21 will be able to possess 28 grams of marijuana for personal use and plant up to six plants at home. The state will then grant licenses for the sale of the soft drug, applying a 15% excise tax. In 1996, California became the first American state to legalize therapeutic use.
