Built on Vancouver Island, Canada, with the best of recently developed green technology, this house is considered one of the most sustainable, safe and eco-efficient models. The owner, Arno Keinonen, recently moved into his new home: "We are very happy with the final result," he said.
Hemp bricks, made with a mixture of hemp and hydraulic lime, are produced in Calgary, maintaining all the properties of hemp fiber. This building material is fireproof, antibacterial and offers superior performance compared to traditional construction, especially in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation. Hemp and lime create a material that "breathes naturally", counteracting the formation of mold and ensuring excellent healthiness of the environments. Furthermore, thanks to its breathability and ability to absorb carbon dioxide, this solution is ideal for low-energy buildings.
Modern construction techniques often allow for passive homes, which are heated primarily with heat pumps. Another advantage is that the construction costs are not much different from those of traditional homes. Michael DeChamplain, director of Just Bio Fiber, said: “With the current environmental situation, it is only a matter of time before these constructions gain a foothold in the construction industry.”
A key factor is that hemp, both during the cultivation phase and when used in construction, absorbs large quantities of CO2 from the atmosphere. If traditional construction is known for its polluting impact, the use of hemp and lime allows the creation of carbon negative buildings, that is, buildings that remove more CO2 than is produced during industrial processes.
The “Harmless Home” is the first project of its kind, with two more under construction. The company’s goal is to make this construction method an industry standard. “So far, we’ve seen that the system is easy to use, and once perfected, we can compete with all the other construction systems currently on the market.”
The home, located just outside Victoria, will continue to be monitored to ensure maximum efficiency throughout its lifecycle.
